Guitar Buying Guide
When choosing a guitar for any aspiring musician, the options can feel endless—but don’t worry, we’ve got your back!
At Leading Note Studios, we always recommend visiting a local music shop, where knowledgeable staff can help you select the right size and style based on your goals, preferences, and budget. There's nothing like trying a guitar in person to feel the difference in sound, size, and comfort.
Start with the Right Size
Guitars come in various sizes to accommodate different ages, heights, and hand sizes. Getting the correct size is super important for comfort and proper technique. Here's a general guide:
1/4 Size: Ages 4–6
1/2 Size: Ages 5–8
3/4 Size: Ages 7–11
7/8 Size or Full Size: Ages 11+ or adults
Let your child try a few options. A good local store will help make sure the guitar fits comfortably when seated and standing.
💸 No Need for a Big Investment at First
When a student is just beginning, a large investment is not necessary. Many music stores offer rental or even rent-to-own options. We recommend:
🎶 Music Mart in Solana Beach
📞 858-259-3940
You can also do a quick Google search for music stores near you. Local stores often provide great service and affordable options.
🪕 Acoustic vs. Classical vs. Electric
Though you can begin with any guitar, LNS guitar instructors recommend starting with an acoustic or classical guitar. They're easier on the fingers, don’t require an amplifier, and are simple grab-and-play instruments.
🔍 Basic Differences Between Classical and Acoustic Guitars:
Feature Classical Guitar Acoustic Guitar Strings Nylon (softer on fingers) Steel (brighter, more twangy sound) Neck Width Wider neck Narrower neck Fret Markers Often absent Usually present Body Size Typically smaller Typically larger Cutaways Rare Common Price Slightly lower cost Slightly higher cost
Nylon strings are great for beginners and those interested in Flamenco or Spanish-style guitar. Steel strings are common in pop, rock, country, and most popular bands.
If your student dreams of rocking out, an electric guitar may be more exciting! It requires an amp but can also be very beginner-friendly, especially with light strings and smaller body shapes.
🎼 What to Look For in a Guitar
Good Action (String Height): Easier to play means more practice time.
