Violin Buying Guide

Starting violin is an exciting journey—but figuring out what to buy (and what size!) can feel overwhelming. Don’t worry, we’ve got you. At Leading Note Studios, we believe every musician deserves the right fit—without the pressure of a huge investment upfront.

🎻 Start with the Right Size

Violins come in multiple sizes, especially for young players. This isn’t just about comfort—it affects technique and sound, too. A violin that’s too big can be frustrating and painful to play. Our instructors can help size your student in just a few minutes.

📏 General Sizing Tip:

  • Ages 3–5 → 1/16 or 1/10

  • Ages 6–7 → 1/8

  • Ages 7–9 → 1/4

  • Ages 9–12 → 1/2

  • Ages 11–13 → 3/4

  • Teen & adult → 4/4 (full size)

🎒 Skip the “backpack test.” Let us or your music store size the violin properly instead.

🎵 Rent or Buy?

When first starting out, renting a violin is a great option. Many music stores offer rent-to-own programs, which means your payments go toward eventual ownership if your student sticks with it.

A quick online search or a visit to a trusted local shop can also turn up great rental programs.

💡 Acoustic vs. Electric?

🎻 Acoustic Violin:

  • Most common and traditional for beginners

  • Beautiful natural tone

  • Required for orchestra programs and classical training

🎸 Electric Violin:

  • Fun for advanced students or rock/pop experimentation

  • Requires an amp or headphones

  • Great for quiet practice at home

👉 Most students begin on an acoustic violin and can branch out later.

🎻 What’s Included in a Beginner Outfit?

A “violin outfit” typically includes:

  • Violin

  • Bow

  • Case

  • Rosin

  • Shoulder rest

Ensure the bow has real horsehair, the bridge is already installed, and a technician properly sets up the instrument.

💰 Budget-Friendly Options

  • Rentals: Usually around $25–$35/month

  • Entry-Level Brands: Cremona, Eastman, and Yamaha

  • Highly Recommended for Beginners:

    • Cremona SV-175

    • Eastman VL80 Outfit

    • Fiddlerman Apprentice Violin

Avoid online “violin-shaped objects” that seem too cheap to be true—they usually are!

🛒 Where to Shop

  • Local stores: Personalized help, better setups, and free size swaps

  • Online: Look for reputable shops like Shar Music, Southwest Strings, or Fiddlershop (they also size and set up instruments before shipping)

🎻 Accessories to Make Life Easier

  • Shoulder Rest – Essential for comfort and posture

  • Rosin – Helps the bow grip the strings

  • Music Stand – Practicing is easier with good posture

  • Tuner/Metronome Combo – Super helpful for early practice

  • Extra Strings – Just in case one breaks
