🎻 Start with the Right Size
Violins come in multiple sizes, especially for young players. This isn’t just about comfort—it affects technique and sound, too. A violin that’s too big can be frustrating and painful to play. Our instructors can help size your student in just a few minutes.
📏 General Sizing Tip:
Ages 3–5 → 1/16 or 1/10
Ages 6–7 → 1/8
Ages 7–9 → 1/4
Ages 9–12 → 1/2
Ages 11–13 → 3/4
Teen & adult → 4/4 (full size)
🎒 Skip the “backpack test.” Let us or your music store size the violin properly instead.
🎵 Rent or Buy?
When first starting out, renting a violin is a great option. Many music stores offer rent-to-own programs, which means your payments go toward eventual ownership if your student sticks with it.
A quick online search or a visit to a trusted local shop can also turn up great rental programs.
💡 Acoustic vs. Electric?
🎻 Acoustic Violin:
Most common and traditional for beginners
Beautiful natural tone
Required for orchestra programs and classical training
🎸 Electric Violin:
Fun for advanced students or rock/pop experimentation
Requires an amp or headphones
Great for quiet practice at home
👉 Most students begin on an acoustic violin and can branch out later.
🎻 What’s Included in a Beginner Outfit?
A “violin outfit” typically includes:

Rosin
Shoulder rest
Ensure the bow has real horsehair, the bridge is already installed, and a technician properly sets up the instrument.
